Boston boys Mighty Mighty Bosstones ended their 16th annual three-night Hometown Throwdown run with a bang – courtesy of their two massive on-stage snow cannons. The band performed in front of a massive Broadway marquee-style backdrop of their name, the stage book-ended by Christmas trees and two giant plastic Santas, everything aglow with holiday lights; ten members total with eight looking dapper in all white and black suits, and two sax-playing fully-suited Santas with “F*ck Fox News” screen-printed on the front of them – a response to Fox News’ recent “Blanta” controversy.
MMB kept the hits coming and were in high spirits, but still couldn’t match the gusto of their opener, Sam Black Church. Lead singer Dicky Barrett sauntered around the stage wearing his trademark sunglasses, tearing through a barrage of songs from the Bosstones library with his incomparable growl. By the end of the night the sold-out hometown crowd was all sweat, snow (confetti, technically), and smiles.
It was hard to say goodnight to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones as they took their final bows, but, rest assured – they will return next year to wallop us with another blizzard of swinging anthems of ska.
