When The Wachowski Brothers sci-fi action film The Matrix landed in theaters in 1999, it polarized the patrons – some cinema goers didn’t understand it and hated it, while others embraced it, fueling a new way of viewing our own environment. The film went on to win four Academy Awards including the nod for Best Visual Effects. Not surprising, as the film itself was full of outlandish imagery and visual effects and is today known for popularizing the effect known as “bullet time”. While visual effects engineer John Gaeta will credit the work of Otomo Katsuhiro and Akira as a source of artistic inspiration for “bullet time”, it wasn’t until he and his team conceived a new technique and built a new system that it became a reality. (No pun intended.)
In the years since the introduction of the term during filming The Matrix films, “bullet time” has become an applied expression in broadcast advertisements and realtime graphics within video games. Which is a logical evolution given that its origin was to create a world which wasn’t defined by conventional rules.
Today’s Tee Of The Day Spotlight is an outstanding expression of two virtual worlds meeting… an iconic “bullet time” Matrix scene is presented as a Mario game move. DeepFriedArt‘s Mario meets The Matrix T-Shirt showcases award winning artwork and gets a special mention for excellent color referencing. Add one to your reality today!
